Shodo Intensive

  • Daikozen-ji 2540 East Mifflin Street Madison, WI, 53704 United States (map)

Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) is about expressing the human condition. It arises from samadhi and is empowered by kiai. When done correctly, it can bring clarity and tranquility to those who encounter it.

In this shodo intensive, led by Esteban Martinez Sensei, students will practice the basic forms and techniques of shodo relating to Zen training as a meditative activity. This intensive is appropriate for both new and experienced students. This is an overview of the schedule:

  • Friday - 7pm - 9pm - Intro

  • Saturday - 9am - 12pm - Morning session

    • 12 - 1pm - Lunch

    • 1 - 4pm - Afternoon session

    • 6 pm - Group dinner

  • Sunday - 9 - 11 am - Final piece

Participants are expected to have their own brushes; we will provide information so that these can be purchased in advance. Out-of-town students are welcome to stay at Daikozen-ji.
