Your breakfast chef is Gordon Greene, Abbot of Chosei Zen, and someone whose 45 years of Zen training includes time spent cooking in a Zen monastery.
“I am fascinated by the technology of Zen training, the drive for simplicity and efficiency in all facets of the training,” Gordon explains. “One way to experience a taste of that technology is to eat a monastic breakfast in the traditional manner. The meal centers on oatmeal, a familiar dish for most everyone, but we will show our particular approach to cooking steel-cut oats enhanced by some additional local ingredients."
More importantly, we will introduce our particular manner of serving, eating, and finishing such a simple meal. This will be a new experience, and we will modify the traditional approach in a way that is friendly to newcomers. But you will understand why I use the word ‘technology’ in connection with the act of eating,” Gordon concludes.
Following the oatmeal and tea, we’ll serve coffee and some familiar breakfast pastries, giving us a chance to talk together about the why and how of what you have just experienced.
