Breakfast from a Zen Monastery

  • Elderflower Retreat 6511 Hillside School Road Spring Green, WI, 53588 United States (map)

Your breakfast chef is Gordon Greene, Abbot of Chosei Zen, and someone whose 45 years of Zen training includes time spent cooking in a Zen monastery.

“I am fascinated by the technology of Zen training, the drive for simplicity and efficiency in all facets of the training,” Gordon explains. “One way to experience a taste of that technology is to eat a monastic breakfast in the traditional manner. The meal centers on oatmeal, a familiar dish for most everyone, but we will show our particular approach to cooking steel-cut oats enhanced by some additional local ingredients."

More importantly, we will introduce our particular manner of serving, eating, and finishing such a simple meal. This will be a new experience, and we will modify the traditional approach in a way that is friendly to newcomers. But you will understand why I use the word ‘technology’ in connection with the act of eating,” Gordon concludes.

Following the oatmeal and tea, we’ll serve coffee and some familiar breakfast pastries, giving us a chance to talk together about the why and how of what you have just experienced.

The cost is $25 plus $1 for processing fees. This class will be cancelled if 10 participants have not registered by March 7. The maximum is 20. Please review Savor’s complete cancellation policy here.
